THE LAST FLOWER (1995)
The children's story by James Thurber, scored for clarinet, cello, harp,
and multi-percussionist, and narrated by the four performers (15:00)
Commissioned by the Ronen Chamber Ensemble of Indianapolis
Published by Meadow Music

He seems to have the humorist's fey drawings in mind as steadily as his words. The score sketches as economically with notes as Thurber did with his pen the stirrings of nature, love's rhapsodies, the activities of construction and destruction alike. It avoids hand-wringing and bombast just as handily as the original. Bach's sense of timing -- when to linger over the text and when to move purposefully ahead -- seemed unerring.

PARTITA (1958)
Five movements for flute, harpsichord, and cello (17:30)
Published by Meadow Music

This work calls for the best efforts of the cellist as well as the flutist and harpsichordist. It uses the name, form and devices of an 18th Century Partita but manages to caricature the whole genre. Attempting such ridicule is like casting Imogene Coca in a Tragedy by Racine. If it comes off it's hilarious, if it's not it's embarrassing. Mr. Bach's spoof is delightful. He must be a real nut.
